Its garden was ranked 3rd in the world by a US magazine (2003) and was awarded 2 Michelin stars (2009).
In the Nagamachi district (ochre earthen walls, cobbled lanes, homes of middle- and high-ranking samurai of the Kaga domain), the Nomura residence is the only one whose interior can still be visited. The garden, with a waterfall and a carp pond, was ranked the third-best Japanese garden in the world by an American magazine in 2003, and has had two stars in the Michelin Green Guide since 2009. Inside are panels painted by masters of the Kaga court and a collection of the family's swords and armour.
The Nomura family served the Maeda lords for eleven generations, from the founding of the Kaga domain until the Meiji Restoration of 1868, when the Nagamachi district lost its function and many residences were dismantled or sold.
