You walk 14 m up on the water roof: an oval of 106×36 m, free, 10:00–21:00.
Above Sakae metro station floats an elliptical glass slab one hundred and six metres long, with a thin layer of water flowing over the glass. You go up by lift and walk round the outer ring, two hundred metres of walkway fourteen metres above the street. From up there you look down on the buses manoeuvring on the ground floor.
Oasis 21 is a multi-level complex opened in 2002, designed and built by the Obayashi company, that brings together a bus terminal, an underground plaza of shops, a lawn and, above it all, the 水の宇宙船, the ‘water spaceship’: a glass roof of about 2,700 square metres covered by about 1,700 square metres of water, held up by four pillars. The water surface is about 14 metres above the street and about 22 above the sunken plaza. It is in Higashi Ward, not in Naka Ward: the boundary between the two runs right there.
ℹ️ Free admission. The water roof is open 10:00–21:00, the underground plaza 6:00–23:00, the shops until 21:00 and the restaurants until 22:00. The walkway is outdoors and high up: in wind or driving rain it is better to put it off. ⚠️ For a few days a year the water is drained for installation work and the roof is left as dry glass: in 2026 this happened on 14 and 15 September and again on 7 and 8 October. The dates are published on the official website and may change.
