The 60-metre skywalk between the laboratories can be visited for free, without booking.
Opened in 2012 with a stated aim (to have researchers from different disciplines meet by chance), the campus is designed specifically for this: the two-storey skywalk connecting the laboratories looks out over the East China Sea, and in 2024 almost 48,000 visitors walked through the centre of the campus on their own, without a guide or a booking.
A postgraduate research university, accredited in October 2011 and opened in 2012 in Onna, on the west coast of the main island. The campus, designed to encourage chance encounters between researchers in different fields, is an example of contemporary scientific architecture that is open to the public far beyond what is usual at a research university.
ℹ️ Self-guided visit (センターコート and skywalk, with café and restaurant) every day 9:00–17:00, no booking required: you register at the main reception and receive a pass. Guided tours with access to the laboratories on Tuesdays and Thursdays, max 15 people, booking required via the official website. Free admission.
