The museum closes at six, but the dōjō stay open until nine in the evening.

It is a prefectural complex, not a private museum: an exhibition hall, a gym and a special dōjō in traditional architecture, with the red hall. The museum closes at six, but the dōjō stay open until nine in the evening, because people really train here: foreign delegations come to practise, not to watch.

Opened on 4 March 2017 on the site of the former Tomigusuku Castle park, it is the home that Okinawa Prefecture has given to karate, which was born in these islands. It includes the exhibition hall on the history and the schools, the gyms and a dedicated dōjō.

ℹ️ Museum 9:00–18:00, last entry 17:30; dōjō 9:00–21:00. Closed every Wednesday and from 30 December to 3 January; if the Wednesday is a public holiday, the closure moves to the next working day. Four hundred yen, 270 for high school and university students, 130 for elementary and junior high school students. Free car park with a hundred spaces, with room for four coaches. Fourteen minutes by car from the airport; by bus, monorail to Ōnoyama-kōen and then line 101 or 105 to the Tomigusuku-kōen-mae bus stop, five minutes' walk.

🚉 Oroku Iriguchi · 20 min walk
