1.4 km of covered arcade, eight streets joined when a feudal lord moved the road there.
Eight consecutive shopping streets (from Kaminochō in the north to Shinnishiterachō in the south) run under a single covered arcade for about 1.4 km, so that you can walk them without ever going outdoors; seen from above they form a cross of about 1,000 by 350 metres. The Tenmaya department store marks the northern end, towards Momotarō Avenue.
The street began as a merchant quarter when, in the late sixteenth century, the lord Ukita Hideie diverted the old Sanyō road so that it passed through the new castle town, and settled merchants and artisans there from all over Bizen province. The shopping street has never moved since, even though the arcade and its present appearance date from the twentieth century.
ℹ️ The arcade can be walked through at any time and has no gate. Shops and the department store have their own opening hours, generally 10:00–19:30/20:00; the Tenmaya in Omotechō is open every day.
