pH between 0.8 and 2.4, some of the most acidic water in Japan: it cures everything ‘except lovesickness’.
The water that feeds the onsen (the hot springs) of Kawayu has a pH between 0.8 and 2.4, among the most acidic in Japan: it seeps from Lake Mashū through the Iōzan volcano, where it heats up before rising to the surface. The village is nicknamed ‘the Kusatsu of the north’, after the hot spring resort in Gunma known for a similar acidity, and a local saying goes that Kawayu's water ‘cures everything except lovesickness’.
Kawayu, whose name literally means ‘hot river water’, is a hot spring village in the town of Teshikaga, fed by the waters of nearby Lake Mashū.
