It was a landfill: Noguchi redesigned it in 1988 and died that year; the park opened in 2005.

If you climb Mount Moere, you are walking on a 52-metre artificial cone made of excavated soil and non-combustible waste: between 1979 and 1990 the area was a landfill of 2,736,000 tonnes. The Japanese-American sculptor Isamu Noguchi visited it in 1988 and redesigned it as a sculpture park, but died that same December; the park only opened in 2005, completed by his foundation.

The park is in Higashi Ward, in the eastern part of Sapporo, on land that for eleven years was the city's landfill. Noguchi's design treated the whole reclaimed site as a single sculpture of earth, lawns and pure geometry: pyramids, cones, spheres.

ℹ️ The glass pyramid, which won the Good Design Award in 2002, houses a restaurant with three Michelin stars.
