The names of 9,171 victims of the bombings of Osaka are inscribed in the ‘Garden of Time’.
The museum, inside Osaka Castle Park, uses objects and photographs to reconstruct the air raids that struck the city. The ‘Toki no Niwa’ (Garden of Time) holds the register of the dead and a plaque with the names identified over time: as of 2026 there are 9,171 out of an estimated total of about 15,000 victims.
Opened in 1991 inside Osaka Castle Park and renovated in April 2015, the centre documents the Allied air raids on Osaka in 1945 and the citizens’ experiences of the war. According to the prefectural police survey of October 1945, there were 12,620 confirmed dead and 2,173 missing: in total, about 15,000 victims are estimated.
