Opened in 1994 as Hotel Ocean 45: 154 metres and 43 floors, the tallest hotel in Kyūshū.
The tower, 154 metres and 43 floors above 2 basement levels, opened on 31 October 1994 as Hotel Ocean 45 (the name came from the sum of the floors, 43 plus the 2 below ground). It was the tallest building in the whole of Kyūshū until 2022, when a residential tower in Fukuoka overtook it; today it remains the tallest hotel building in the region. In 2002 it came under Starwood and took the name Sheraton Grande Ocean Resort; in June 2025 management returned to Phoenix Resort. Around it, a centuries-old black pine forest separates the buildings from the beach on the Pacific coast.
The complex began in the late eighties as an integrated resort project (hotels, golf, spa) in the pine forest north of Miyazaki, at a time of heavy tourism investment in the prefecture. Today it brings together three hotels, signature golf courses and the Banyan Tree spa, as well as the tower.
ℹ️ The observation terrace at the top of the tower (154 m) is reserved, on a guided tour, for Club Floor guests only: it is not a paid public viewpoint like a city tower. The pine forest and the beach around it can still be walked freely. Hotel information: tel. 0985-21-1111.
