Ninety metres suspended over the emerald lake of Ōima: ten people cross at a time.
The steel-cable bridge, 90 metres long and 8 above the water, crosses the basin of the Ōima Reservoir in the Sumatakyō Gorge, at the foot of the Southern Alps: the emerald and cobalt colour of the water is an optical effect of light refraction (the Tyndall effect) on the suspended particles. For safety you cross it in groups of ten people at most, and it sways with every step.
It is among the most representative attractions of inland Shizuoka, in a remote valley that can only be reached on mountain roads; in 2012 TripAdvisor included it among the world's ten pedestrian suspension bridges ‘to cross at least once’. A local tradition holds that a wish for love made in the middle of the bridge will come true.
ℹ️ Free access, no fixed hours. From car park No. 3 at Sumatakyō Onsen it is 40–45 minutes on foot. Car park for 500 cars, 500 yen per day. From the Shimada-Kanaya interchange (Shin-Tōmei) it is about 90 minutes by car in all.
