Japan's leading port for dried aji, on the deepest bay in the country.
Suruga Bay drops steeply close to the coast, and this brings to the waters off Numazu deep-sea species of fish that elsewhere are caught far from the shore: about 1,200 different species live in the bay, and deep-sea trawling is an active business at the port. Numazu is Japan's leading producer of dried aji (horse mackerel).
The port area includes the Numazu Uoichiba INO fish market, where you can watch the auctions, the Numazu Minato Shinsenkan shopping centre with local produce, and the deep-sea fish aquarium with its attached coelacanth museum.
ℹ️ Opening hours vary from shop to shop; the deep-sea fish aquarium is open 10:00–18:00 all year round, except for a maintenance closure in January. By car about 30 minutes from the Numazu or Naganuma-Numazu interchanges; by bus about 15 minutes from Numazu Station.
