An artificial island from 1994: a fake Mediterranean port, 24 attractions, a tuna market.
On the artificial island of Wakayama Marina City (115,673 sq m, part of a 65-hectare development across land and water), Porto Europa recreates a fake medieval Mediterranean port: stone paving, brick facades, twenty-four attractions inside the amusement park area. Next door, the Kuroshio Ichiba fish market stages live tuna cutting, and the Kino no Kuni Fruits Village sells produce from the prefecture's citrus groves. The island was created in 1994 for the World Expo Wakayama, coinciding with the opening of Kansai International Airport: in 2016 alone it counted about 3 million visitors.
Artificial island in the municipality of Wakayama (Kemi neighbourhood), built from 1989 under the 1986 regional development plan and opened in 1994. Besides Porto Europa and the Kuroshio market, it includes an onsen (Kuroshio Onsen) and accommodation. Run by Wakayama Marina City Co., Ltd. An exception to the tier cap (§1 of the campaign brief, traveller's decision of 05/09/2026): a theme park of this importance does not take up one of the middle tier's own 15–20 entries.
ℹ️ Entry to the park is free; you pay for individual attractions and special events. Standard pass: 4,800 yen for adults and 4,000 yen for children. Basic opening hours are 11:00–16:00, extended at weekends, on public holidays and in high season: check the calendar before visiting. The island's car park has 3,500 spaces and costs 1,500 yen per day. From Kainan it takes about 10 minutes, either by bus from the JR station or by car from the Hanwa Expressway interchange.
