Andō Tadao designed it as an inverted cone: you go up by ramps only, never stairs.
Opened on 28 April 2007 to a design by the architect Andō Tadao: reinforced concrete, one floor below ground and four above, in the shape of an inverted triangular pyramid that widens by 5 degrees towards the sky. There are no stairs between the exhibition floors: a single ramp winds around a central triangular core, and visitors climb to the fourth floor along a route designed to recall the uphill climb of the novel's protagonists towards their goals.
A museum dedicated to the novel ‘Saka no Ue no Kumo’ (Clouds Above the Hill) by Shiba Ryōtarō and to the three Meiji figures from Matsuyama whose story it tells: the brothers Akiyama Yoshifuru and Akiyama Saneyuki, and the poet Masaoka Shiki. It stands next to Bansuisō, at the foot of Matsuyama Castle.
ℹ️ 9:00–18:30 (last entry 18:00), closed on Mondays and for the changeover of exhibitions in February–March. Admission: adults 500 yen, over-65s and high school students 250; the second floor has free entry.
