The only castle in Chiba among the 100 famous ones: over a thousand cherry trees bloom in late March.
Of the castle, which never had a masonry keep, what remains today are earthworks and dry moats, perfectly preserved among the trees. Over a thousand cherry trees of some fifty varieties grow here, including thirteen prized varieties planted since the Edo period, which bloom between late March and early April and are reflected in the Demaru moat.
Sakura Castle was the seat of the Hotta clan, daimyō of the Sakura domain during the Edo period. It is the only castle in Chiba Prefecture included in the ‘100 Famous Castles of Japan’ (日本100名城); the nearby Motosakura Castle is instead among the ‘100 Further Castles’ (続日本100名城).
ℹ️ Public park with free entry, always open. The National Museum of Japanese History and the samurai houses, which are separate, have their own opening hours and tickets (source: aggregated research on tourist sites and the Sakura municipality website).
