Alleys of bars born from a post-war black market, between two roads in Sangenjaya.
The name, ‘triangular zone’, comes from the shape of the grid of alleys squeezed between National Route 246 and Setagaya-dōri, in front of Sangenjaya Station: born as a black market after the war, today it is full of izakaya (the taverns where you drink alongside small dishes), a sake bar open since 1982, and signs from the '50s still lit. It has no entrance and no hours of its own: you visit in the evening, walking from one bar to the next.
The Sankaku Chitai began as a black market in post-war Tokyo, when the area in front of Sangenjaya Station filled with illegal shacks and stalls; the informal name, ‘triangular zone’, remains tied to the shape of the grid of alleys enclosed between two main roads. A redevelopment of the block has been announced since at least 2023, with no date set: the current look of the neighbourhood is not guaranteed in the long term.
ℹ️ Not applicable in the strict sense: these are public streets, always open to walk through. The bars inside have their own hours, and you go mainly in the evening. No platform gives an aggregate rating for the area itself: the picture comes from editorial sources (Timeout Tokyo, Tokyo Shimbun, Enjoy Tokyo), not from travellers' reviews.
