It keeps the Kusanagi sword, one of the three imperial regalia; the grounds are open 24 hours.
The shrine keeps the Kusanagi no Tsurugi, one of the three sacred regalia of the Japanese imperial house: according to tradition the sword was brought here in the 1st century, in the time of Emperor Keikō. The grounds are open every day of the year, 24 hours a day: anyone coming in at night uses the car park at the west gate, the only one that stays open.
The shrine stands on the Atsuta heights, south of central Nagoya, and in the New Year period alone it draws more than two million visitors. A large centuries-old camphor tree grows within the grounds.
ℹ️ Grounds always open. Amulets and goshuin from about 7:00 until sunset; the car park closes at 17:00. The main shrine and the treasures have their own hours for rites and ceremonies.
