Its stone torii is over 12 metres tall: this is where the ushioni, the bull-demon, sets out from.

A shrine at the foot of the ruins of Kamae Castle, on the Suga River north of central Uwajima, known for its large stone torii, over 12 metres tall and among the tallest in Japan in that material. Every year on 22–24 July it hosts the Warei Taisai, which includes the Uwajima Ushioni Matsuri: giant ushioni, bull-demon heads on bodies of matting carried on the shoulders, process through the city in a tradition more than three hundred years old, together with a parade, a dance contest and fireworks over the sea.

A Shinto shrine in Uwajima dedicated to Yamane Kizaemon, a seventeenth-century official venerated as a deity after a violent death.

ℹ️ The shrine grounds are public and always accessible. The Warei Taisai/Ushioni Matsuri is held every year on 22–24 July: no booking is required, but the city centre is very crowded on those days.
