The only aquarium floating on the sea in western Japan, shaped like a doughnut.
The structure, literally shaped like a doughnut, floats moored on the Amakusa sea: it is the only aquarium of its kind in western Japan. Its story begins in 1982 with an undersea observation ship, the まつしま; the current aquarium was reopened in 2021 as ‘Amakusa Pearl Garden & Sea Donut Aquarium’. Five zones tell the story of the local sea (between Ariake, Yatsushiro and the East China Sea), the rivers of the world, jellyfish and colourful fish, up to the tank where you can touch and feed the dolphins.
The わくわく海中水族館シードーナツ aquarium is part of the Amakusa Pearl Garden complex, on Amakusa Kamishima Island, and grew out of a local tradition of sea observation that goes back to 1982 with the ship まつしま. The current doughnut-shaped floating building, reopened in 2021, shows the wildlife of the three seas surrounding Amakusa as well as tropical freshwater species, with particular attention to direct contact with the dolphins.
