No pillars: thirteen steel tubes run through the six floors and hold everything up.
The architect Toyō Itō completed it in 2001: in place of pillars there are thirteen steel tubes that pierce the six floors and the two basement levels, and carry the lifts, the building services and the air with them. Inside are the municipal library with half a million volumes, two floors of galleries and a video library of eleven thousand titles.
Toyo Itō's building of glass and tubes, one of the best known in contemporary Japanese architecture. It is a public facility, with a library and exhibition rooms.
