The garden uses Sakurajima, across the bay, as borrowed scenery.

Built between 1658 and 1661 as the seaside villa of the nineteenth lord of the Satsuma domain, Shimazu Mitsuhisa, the residence looks out over Kinkō Bay and uses the outline of Sakurajima as shakkei, borrowed landscape. Inside the park are the remains of the blast furnace of the Shūseikan industrial project (1852–53), which in 2015 became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution’.

A garden open to the public since 1949 and still run by the company Shimazu Kōgyō, a descendant of the clan. Designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty (official name: ‘Sengan-en with the garden of the Hanakura Temporary Palace’) on 15 May 1958.

ℹ️ Open 9:00–17:00 all year round, with no closing days. Approximate ticket price: 1,600 yen for adults and 800 yen for students; check the current price. About 10 minutes from Kagoshima-Chūō on the Sakurajima/Sengan-en scheduled bus.
