Since 2010 the 89,000 roof tiles have been titanium, not ceramic: they weigh less in an earthquake.
The temple dates from 628, when two fisherman brothers found a small statue of Kannon, the Buddhist deity of mercy, in their nets in the Sumida River. The main building, the Hondō, is a 1958 reconstruction, made after the bombing raids of March 1945 had destroyed the original. The shopping street leading to it, Nakamise-dōri, dates from around 1685: it is among the oldest in Japan.
The shopping street runs for about 250 m from the Kaminarimon to the Hōzōmon.
ℹ️ The temple opens at 6:00 (6:30 in winter) and closes at 17:00; entry to the complex remains open at all hours, but the shops on the shopping street keep their own hours and many pull down their shutters early in the evening.
