In 1625 a monk designed it as a miniature Lake Biwa, island included.
In 1625 the monk Tenkai designed it as a miniature copy of Lake Biwa, with an artificial island in place of Chikubushima and, on it, the Bentendō, the hall dedicated to the goddess Benten. Since 1672 a stone bridge has let you reach it on foot.
Large natural pond inside Ueno Park, divided into three basins: the lotus pond, the rowing-boat pond and the one inside the zoo. The Bentendō stands in the centre.
ℹ️ The path around the pond is always open. The lotuses cover the water between July and August.

On a bench by the pond, Kira Tsubasa of A-RISE and Honoka tell each other what really drives μ's, and shake hands. The pond appears again in the eleventh episode of the second season, ‘私たちが決めたこと’, when they decide to go, all together, wherever each of them wants; the same episode also shows one of the park's museums, without making clear which one.
The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity
On a bench on the bank of the pond, near the 不忍池西 crossing, Keiichirō confesses his feelings to Kyōko, the pair who will become Rintarō's parents: chapter 28 of the manga shows it in a flashback panel, when Rintarō asks his father to teach him to make the cake for Kaoruko, and the spin-off about the parents, chapters 154–156, tells it in full. The bench really exists and the cherry branch beside it is drawn exactly as it is in real life. The anime cuts the scene.
