Edo kiriko since 1834: a workshop since 2004, where you can watch the cutter at work behind the window
Edo kiriko glass (hand-cut glass, which spread in Edo from 1834) has been made here since 2004, when the space split off from the glassmaker Hirota Glass (founded in 1899) as a workshop certified by Sumida City. Through the window you can see the cutter at work; inside, the pieces are on sale, almost all between 4,000 and 8,000 yen according to one review, and you can book to cut your own glass.
A shop and workshop set up in 2004 as a spin-off of Hirota Glass Co., a glassmaker founded in 1899, and recognised by Sumida City as the base of a ‘Sumida Meister’ (the title the city gives to local master craftsmen): Kawai Kōzō, who has worked Edo kiriko here since 2010.
ℹ️ Open Tuesday–Saturday, 10:00–18:00 (one city source gives 10:00–17:00), closed on Sundays, Mondays and public holidays. No entrance ticket: you look at the window and buy freely. The cutting experience (体験) is booked on its own website; some reviews report little assistance during the work, while those who come only to look or buy say they are more satisfied. 6–8 minutes on foot from Kinshichō Station.
