Fifty minutes by train from Shinjuku and you are on a 599-metre mountain.
The Tokyo tourism board calls it 「都心に最も近い大自然エリア」, the area of real nature closest to the city centre. Five hundred and ninety-nine metres, several maintained trails that climb to the summit, and on the mountain stands the Yakuō-in temple.
It is the mountain that Tokyoites climb at the weekend, and that ease is also its drawback: the tourism board itself advises going on a weekday, because at weekends it is very crowded.
ℹ️ 50 minutes from Shinjuku. The mountain is open and the trails can be walked at any hour, but the ropeway has its own hours, and so does the temple. ⚠️ At weekends it is packed: it is the official tourism board that says so, not just any guide.
