A hundred varieties of hydrangea, ten thousand plants: they bloom from June to the end of July.
From early June the temple grounds disappear under the hydrangeas: about a hundred varieties and ten thousand plants, which stay in flower until the end of July. On the fourth Sunday of June tea is served outdoors among the beds and exhibitions are set up. For the other ten months of the year those same beds are dark green, and the temple goes back to being a country building.
A temple founded in 720, about thirteen hundred years ago. It is the first of the twenty-five 「関西花の寺」, the ‘flower temples of Kansai’, a circuit of temples in the Osaka-Kyoto region each chosen for one bloom. In Fukuchiyama it is known as the hydrangea temple.
ℹ️ ⚠️ No opening hours stated on the official page. During the hydrangea season there is an admission charge, and the amount is not stated; outside that season the page does not say whether you pay, or how much. The hydrangea festival, with outdoor tea and exhibitions, falls on the fourth Sunday of June. It is fifteen minutes’ walk from Ishiura Station, or a twenty-minute bus ride from Fukuchiyama or Ayabe. ⚠️ There is another Kannon-ji, in Kyōtanabe, in the same prefecture: they are two distinct temples with the same name and must not be merged.
