20 metres high: legend says a prince sealed a defeated demon inside it.
A block of andesite rock about 20 metres high rises on its own at the mouth of the Takeno River, formed about 15 million years ago by the cooling of undersea magma: it is one of the landmark sites of the San'in Coast UNESCO Global Geopark. According to local legend, the third son of Emperor Yōmei defeated three demons in the area and sealed one of them, Dokuruma, inside this rock. Beside it stretches Yuhigaura Beach, ‘sunset bay’, known for its sunsets over the Sea of Japan from spring to summer.
The rock is in the municipality of Kyotango, on the northern coast of the Tango Peninsula, a geological landmark of the area.
ℹ️ Public coastal area, always accessible and free, visible from the coast road and from a small car park.
