a concert hall with 1,999 seats and one of the largest pipe organs in Japan

The theatre opened in 1990 with a structure of several stacked levels, designed to isolate the halls from the noise of the metro below. It contains four halls, including a large 1,999-seat concert hall with one of the largest pipe organs in Japan, devoted to classical music. After the 2011–2012 restoration it is the second best-rated attraction in Ikebukuro on 4travel, behind only the Sunshine aquarium.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre (東京芸術劇場) is an arts centre in Nishi-Ikebukuro, Toshima, opened in 1990 to a design by the Ashihara Architectural & Design Institute (Yoshinobu Ashihara). The building has a structure of several stacked levels to isolate the halls acoustically from the nearby metro line, and it contains four halls: a 1,999-seat concert hall, an 834-seat playhouse and two smaller multipurpose halls, for theatre, classical music, opera and ballet. From April 2011 it was renovated, reopening on 1 September 2012 (design by Matsuda Hirata Design and Toshio Koyama Architectural Institute). Address: 〒171-0021 Tokyo, Toshima, Nishi-Ikebukuro 1-8-1.

ℹ️ Times and tickets depend on the performance being staged in each hall; it has no general opening hours for the public. It is directly accessible from Ikebukuro Station.
