Three hundred sculptures around the lake: the oldest open-air art biennale, since 1961.
One hundred and eighty-nine hectares around Lake Tokiwa, in a park opened in 1925, hold about 300 contemporary sculptures, around a hundred of which came from the UBE Biennale of contemporary Japanese sculpture (the longest-running open-air sculpture exhibition in Japan, founded in 1961 and held every odd-numbered year between October and November). The park's zoo, reopened in 2016 with ‘recreated habitat’ enclosures instead of traditional cages, houses monkeys, cranes and flamingos; the swans that once lived on the lake disappeared after a bird flu outbreak in 2011.
Public park built around an artificial lake created by reclaiming a marshy area; registered in 2008 as a national monument in the category of scenic sites, for the way it uses the natural landscape despite the lake's artificial origin.
ℹ️ Entry to the park is open and free. Zoo open 9:30–17:00, closed on Tuesdays; ticket 500 yen adults, 200 yen children. 15 minutes on foot from JR Tokiwa Station.
