Satoyama zoo with red pandas: it also breeds the Japanese rock ptarmigan in captivity.
The park, opened on 28 April 1984 on Furuisawa hill, houses 95 animal species (figure from October 2024) arranged by habitat, from the big cat enclosure to the red panda one. It is one of the Japanese facilities involved in captive breeding of the rock ptarmigan (ライチョウ), a bird that lives only above 2,400 metres in the Japanese Alps and is a species at risk: the park has its own conservation fund for it.
Toyama's municipal zoo, designed on the model of satoyama, the rural landscape of woodland and farmland managed by people: 33 hectares on the hill that was once home to Toyama-Furuisawa Castle.
ℹ️ Open 9:00–16:30 (15 March–30 November) and 10:00–15:30 (1 December–23 February). Source: official park website.
