Buddhist temple with stained glass and a pipe organ: inside, it looks like an India in concrete.
The stone exterior, with arches and columns recalling the architecture of the ancient temples of India, is unusual among Tokyo's temples; inside, a pipe organ and coloured stained glass accompany Buddhist worship. Every morning at 7:00 there is a service followed by a sermon of about five minutes, open to anyone, with no booking. It is 205 metres from the Tsukiji outer market.
Tsukiji Hongwanji is a temple of the Jōdo Shinshū school of Buddhism, rebuilt in 1934 to a design by Itō Chūta after the fire caused by the 1923 earthquake. Since 2014 the building, the three gates and the walls have been an Important Cultural Property (重要文化財).
ℹ️ Open from 6:00 to 16:00; every day at 7:00 the morning service is followed by a sermon of about five minutes, free and with no booking. No ticket for the temple: the paid museum inside, which requires booking, is separate from the temple itself and not to be confused with it. 205 m from the Tsukiji outer market, already in the catalogue.
