Emerald green from the sulphur: water at 51°C, among the most sulphurous in Japan.
The Bijin no Izumi public bath opens Tsukioka's water to people not staying at a ryokan: a spring at 51°C, weakly alkaline, with among the highest sulphur concentrations in Japan. The colour, an emerald green that according to the hotel association changes shade with the seasons and the weather, has given the onsen the nickname ‘bath of beauty’ (美人の湯).
Tsukioka Onsen, in the municipality of Shibata, is known throughout Japan for the emerald-green colour of its sulphurous water, among the most concentrated in the country. The Bijin no Izumi daytime public bath lets you try it without booking a night at one of the area's ryokan.
