On the 66 km of Kujūkuri, Tsurigasaki hosted the surfing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Kujūkuri Beach runs for about 66 kilometres from Asahi to Isumi, the longest continuous sandy coast in Japan. The Tsurigasaki stretch, in Ichinomiya, was chosen as the venue for the surfing events of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics for the consistent quality of its waves, and is today the main meeting place for surfers on the coast.

The name ‘Kujūkuri’ (ninety-nine ri) comes from a legend about Minamoto no Yoritomo, who is said to have had an arrow planted every ri along the coast, counting ninety-nine of them; the real length is closer to sixty-six ri.

ℹ️ Free access, seasonal lifeguard cover in summer on some stretches; the Tsurigasaki stretch is equipped for surfing all year round (source: aggregated search across several tourist sites and Wikipedia).
