Kyoto

Kisaichi Maruyama Tumulus

私市円山古墳公園

Open on the mapwith over 1,800 wonders of Japan

The largest burial mound in northern Kyoto Prefecture: 81 metres in diameter, and you can walk on it.

You climb on foot up a round hill that is not a hill: it is a tomb, and the path winds round its side to the top. Eighty-one metres in diameter and ten high, with the original shape remade in grass, so you can tell where the ground ends and the construction begins. What was inside is elsewhere, in a museum: here, the bulk remains.

A circular burial mound from the fifth century, the largest in the northern half of Kyoto Prefecture. A National Historic Site since March 1994; the grave goods found in the chamber have been a Prefectural Cultural Property since March 2004 and are not kept on site. The area has been laid out as a public park.

ℹ️ Free entry, no gate and no opening hours. You can get there only on the municipal bus あやバス, on the 西坂線 line from JR Ayabe, 「戸奈瀬」 bus stop, then five minutes on foot; by car, you go up from prefectural road 74. There is no ticket office and no staff: information is given by the Ayabe city museum (0773-43-1366).
