The water travels 7 km by pipe from Kuronagi: it comes out at 92–98°C and reaches the town at 63°C.
The spa town was founded on 22 November 1923 to serve the workers building the hydroelectric power stations on the Kurobe River: two engineers on the project, soaking in the hot water one evening, chose the name Unazuki in the hope of a fame to match the lunar fame of Uji and Nara. The actual spring is 7 km further upstream, at Kuronagi, inside the gorge: the water arrives through pipes (today, for 72% of their length, inside tunnels), dropping from 92–98°C at the spring to 63°C in the town. The 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake measurably changed its composition, with more dissolved metasilicic acid and manganese.
A small spa town in the municipality of Kurobe, at the mouth of the Kurobe River gorge, with about 15 places to stay and the terminus of the Kurobe Kyōkoku tourist railway.
ℹ️ The town is public and always accessible; the individual baths and hotels have their own hours. It is the starting point of the Kurobe Kyōkoku Tetsudō scenic train into the gorge. Source: Japanese Wikipedia and the website of the Yamanoha hotel.
