About 80 fabric shops along one km of Nippori Chūō-dōri, a figure from the association.
Along about a kilometre of Nippori Chūō-dōri stand about 80 textile shops (a figure from the Arakawa municipality and the traders' association, against the 90–140 or so given by some aggregators): once a wholesale district for tailors, it is now also open to retail customers. Each shop has a different range: Japanese and Western fabrics, leather, buttons, yarns, sewing accessories. Beyond the main street, the side alleys (‘behind Nippori’) hide other, more niche shops.
Born as a wholesale district for the clothing industry, it is now home to shops that are also open to retail customers, along a stretch of Nippori Chūō-dōri at the station's east exit. The Arakawa municipality holds a design competition linked to the street every year.
ℹ️ There are no single opening hours: each shop has its own, generally between 9:00 and 19:00. Public street, no entry ticket for the area.
