Beneath the four rows of elms stands a bronze Ulysses by Giacomo Manzù.
The keyaki, Japanese elms, were planted in 1958 along the street rebuilt after the 1945 bombings, and now their branches cover the whole avenue. Three sculptures stand on the central promenade, and one of them is Giacomo Manzù's Ulysses. In September the jazz festival plays beneath them, and in December the lights are switched on.
Avenue lined with zelkovas in the centre of Sendai. It is also the venue of the Jōzenji Street Jazz Festival and the SENDAI Hikari no Pageant.

This is where Higashikata Josuke's address comes from: in the fourth part he lives at ‘Jōzenji 1-6’. Along the avenue stand the bronze sculptures of the Sendai Mediatheque, which readers photograph because their poses recall those of the series.
