Seven covered streets over 700 metres and more than 250 shops: only 10% are vacant, bucking the decline of Japanese shōtengai.
The complex joins seven streets (Nishimonzen, Dōjōmonzen, Komeya-chō and Naka-ichi in the main covered stretch, with Ōichi, Ekidōri and Shinmachi branching off) into a single shopping area that crosses the centre of Yamaguchi from east to west. The street names date back to the Nanboku-chō period (14th century), and the arcade was passed through during the movements of the Meiji Restoration. At the centre, in the Naka-ichi section, stands the city's only department store, Yamaguchi Izutsuya: it opened on 3 October 2008 in place of the earlier Chimakiya department store, and in July 2026 it hosted the prefecture's first store of the Roppia supermarket chain.
A network of shopping arcades in the heart of Yamaguchi city. Three major festivals mark the year along the arcade: the Gion Matsuri (20–27 July), the lantern Tanabata (6–7 August) and the Tenjin Matsuri (23 November); added to these are more recent events such as a Halloween parade and a Spanish-themed festival linked to the passage of Francis Xavier.
ℹ️ Izutsuya is open 10:00–18:30, closed on 1 January and on some irregular days; the individual shops on the street have their own hours.
