The pavilion from 1699 stands almost entirely in the pond: in 2016 it ranked fifth in Japan.

A country residence of the lords of the Fukui domain, it took its present form in 1699: a pavilion whose rooms face the same pond on every side, with the water in some places flowing under the floor. The name Yōkōkan dates from 1884 and was chosen by the last daimyō, Matsudaira Shungaku. The American magazine Journal of Japanese Gardening ranked it the fifth garden in Japan in 2016, after it had been third for three years running (2008–2010).

An Edo-period stroll garden in the centre of Fukui city, a national Place of Scenic Beauty.

ℹ️ Check opening hours and tickets on the Fukui City website before you set off; you visit the reconstructed pavilion barefoot, as you would a traditional house.
