Town hall, library, station and hotel: in a mountain village, all by Kuma Kengo.
A small mountain town in the interior of Shikoku where the architect Kuma Kengo built, over the course of thirty years, a whole group of public buildings under the ‘Kumo no Ue’ (above the clouds) brand: the town hall, the municipal library, hence known as the ‘library above the clouds’, the Machi-no-eki Yusuhara town station, the Kumo no Ue hotel (original building from 1994, closed in 2021 because the structure had deteriorated, and reopened in a new building in April 2024) and the small Kumo no Ue gallery, now closed. At the start of Kuma's career, Yusuhara was one of the first testing grounds for public architecture in local wood.
A mountain town in Takaoka District, in the interior of Kochi Prefecture.
ℹ️ The town hall and the library have public opening hours; the hotel is a private business; the gallery is listed as closed. Opening hours and prices of the individual buildings should be checked with each one.
