The Tokugawa temple has a view of Tokyo Tower, and the mausoleum is closed.

The main gate opens right beneath Tokyo Tower, which rises behind the temple roof: it is the image Zōjō-ji is recognised by. Inside it keeps the Kuro Honzon, a secret Buddha linked to Tokugawa Ieyasu, and it is the family temple of the shogunate.

Zōjō-ji has six hundred years of history and is the main temple of the Pure Land Buddhist sect in Tokyo. Six Tokugawa shoguns rest in its grounds.

ℹ️ ⚠️ The mausoleum of the Tokugawa shoguns 「徳川将軍家墓所」 has been closed to visitors since 1 August 2026, according to a notice from the temple itself: anyone looking for it will find it shut. The temple and the gate can still be visited.
