At 1,304 m on the 40th parallel: 21 runs over 282 hectares, and the snow is called ‘aspirin snow’.
The plateau stretches among birches, meadows and virgin forest at 800–900 metres, with the air of a European Alpine upland, chalet-style guesthouses included. In winter the ski resort that sits on it is one of the largest in Tōhoku: 21 runs over 282 hectares, on the 40th parallel north, with snow so dry that it has earned the local nickname ‘aspirin snow’. The gondola that climbs to the top station at 1,304 metres also runs from June to early November for the view from above.
A plateau in the municipality of Hachimantai, at the foot of the mountain range that divides Iwate and Akita. Developed as a ski resort from the '80s, it is still visited all year round for its summer-holiday scenery (trekking, mountain biking, the panoramic gondola) as well as for its winter snow.
ℹ️ The Appi Gondola runs from June to early November for the green season; in winter the ski facilities have their own schedule, with lessons and equipment hire. The plateau is an open area and has no stated closing time.
