Three concentric moats surround what remains of the castle, built in 1580 by Tsutsui Junkei, enlarged under Toyotomi Hidenaga and with its outer moats dug by Masuda Nagamori. Every spring about 600 Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom along the banks of the moats.

The core of the castle (the keep, the Bishamon enclosure and the Seal enclosure) is designated a historic site by Nara Prefecture, not by the national government; in 2017 it was added to the list of Japan's ‘continued hundred castles’ (続日本100名城), and in 1990 to the list of the hundred famous cherry blossom spots (さくら名所100選).
