The fan-shaped island of 1636: the only gateway to the West during sakoku, now rebuilt.
The fan-shaped perimeter follows that of 1636 exactly: 15 buildings rebuilt since 1996, including the Dutch captain's residence and the warehouses, restore the look of the only authorised point of contact with the West during two centuries of sakoku.
An artificial island built in 1636 on the orders of the shogunate to isolate the Portuguese merchants, then assigned to the Dutch East India Company from 1641: until 1859 it was Japan's only trading channel with Europe. Demolished when the bay was filled in during the Meiji period, since 1996 it has been undergoing a historically faithful reconstruction on the original perimeter.
