Domon Ken Photography Museum

土門拳記念館(土門拳写真美術館)

Open on the mapwith over 1,800 wonders of Japan

One hundred and thirty-five thousand photographs donated: the first museum in Japan devoted solely to photography.

The first museum in Japan devoted entirely to photography, created from the donation of the complete work of the photographer Domon Ken, a native of Sakata: about 135,000 images, including the series ‘Pilgrimage to Ancient Temples’ that brought him national fame. The building by Taniguchi Yoshio, the garden by Teshigahara Hiroshi and the sculptures by Isamu Noguchi in the courtyard form a single space conceived as a work of art, which won awards in 1984, 1987 and 2001.

A Sakata municipal museum opened to collect and study the work of the photographer Domon Ken (1909–1990); renamed ‘Domon Ken Photography Museum’ in April 2025.

ℹ️ Open 9:00–17:00, last entry 16:30; closed on Mondays from December to March (or the following day if Monday is a public holiday), at the end of the year and during exhibition changeovers. About 15 minutes by car or bus from JR Sakata (bus stop ‘Domon Ken Kinenkan’), 15 minutes by taxi.
