Former Minshuku Akabu – wreck of the Hamayuri

A stretch of coast in the Akahama neighbourhood of the town of Ōtsuchi (Kamaishi district, Iwate), where the minshuku (family-run inn) Akabu once stood. During the tsunami of 11 March 2011 the sightseeing ship Hamayuri was lifted by the waves and deposited on top of the inn building. The ship was later dismantled and the minshuku moved elsewhere; today a panel with period photos stands on the site, recalling what happened.

ℹ️ It is not a paid or fenced site: all there is on the spot is the period photo panel. The nearest station is Kirikiri, about 15 minutes away by bus. For information on the area, the number given is 0193-42-6877.

In the sequence in the 常世, the non-world beyond the doors, the image of the ship stranded on the roof of the inn appears twice: when four-year-old Suzume wanders there after the disaster, and again when seventeen-year-old Suzume goes back in.
