About ten thousand species on twenty-four hectares, greenhouse included, for five hundred yen.
You come out of the Kitayama metro and walk in: twenty-four hectares to cover on foot, a cherry wood, a rose garden, a water-lily pond, a section devoted to endangered plants. It is not a garden to look at sitting down like those of the temples (it is a park), and the greenhouse is included in the five hundred yen.
Opened in 1924, it is the oldest public botanical garden in Japan. About twenty-four hectares and about ten thousand species, including seven thousand cultivated varieties and three hundred endangered species.
ℹ️ ¥500 adults, ¥250 for high school students and over-65s, free up to junior high, ¥400 for groups of thirty; the greenhouse is included in the ticket. Open 9:00–17:00 with last entry at 16:00; the greenhouse 10:00–16:00 with last entry at 15:30; hours change with the season. Closed from 28 December to 4 January. ⚠️ With last entry at 16:00 and the greenhouse closing at 16:00, it does not work for a late afternoon. It is right by Kitayama metro station, on the Karasuma Line: one of the few places in the north that do not force you to take a bus.
