Building 30, from 1916, is the first reinforced-concrete apartment block in Japan.

Building 30 (30号棟), built in 1916 and up to 7 storeys high after an extension, is the first large reinforced-concrete residential building in Japan: it housed coal miners on an island of just 6.3 hectares which in 1960 reached 5,267 inhabitants, a density of 83,600 people per km², over nine times that of central Tokyo. Since 2015 a component of the UNESCO site of the Meiji industrial revolution.

An abandoned mining island off Nagasaki.

ℹ️ Tours land only on the southern walkway and do not reach the buildings used for filming: you see them from a distance. The Gunkanjima Digital Museum, on the mainland in Nagasaki, shows, in the 3D theatre on its fourth floor, a video made up of scenes from the film.

Attack on Titan

Live-action filming location. The abandoned mining island is the ruined city of the two 2015 films: in summer 2014 a crew of 110 people, the largest ever to land on the island, obtained permission from the municipality to film even in the restricted areas, on condition that they did not damage the buildings, and Building No. 65, the huge residential block, serves as the main background.
