Seven kilometres of coral sand without a single tree: it can only be reached by boat, in 20–30 minutes.

Off the south-eastern coast of Kume Island, a bank of coral sand about 7 km long rises out of an emerald-green sea, divided into three stretches (Mēnu Hama, Nakanu Hama, and Hate no Hama proper). There is no shade or vegetation: only white sand, clear shallow water, and around it coral colonies with colourful fish for snorkelling.

Hate no Hama is a sandbar (砂州) with no stable land above water – it forms and wears away with the movements of the sea – about 3–5 km off Kume Island. It can only be reached by boat, usually from Tomari Fishalina (泊フィッシャリーナ), in 20–30 minutes; it is managed for tourism by the 一般社団法人久米島町観光協会 (Kume Island Tourism Association). It is described as one of the most beautiful beaches in Japan (‘東洋一’: the most beautiful in the Far East, in the recurring formula of local sources).

ℹ️ Reachable only on a boat tour from Tomari Fishalina; no fixed hours or access price found on the official page of the tourism body: it depends on the tour operator you choose. Activities on site: swimming and snorkelling. No permanent facilities on the sandbar itself (no shade, no services).
