It inspired copies in Himeji and Takamatsu: the only one to last long, open since 1998.
A covered market and eatery opened on 17 October 1998 on land that once held the residence of a senior official of the Tosa domain named Hirome: the estate disappeared with the Meiji Restoration, but the neighbourhood went on being affectionately called ‘Hirome Yashiki’, hence the market's name (before it opened, the area was a car park). About 60 shops (fishmongers, butchers, grocers, ready-to-eat food stalls) face about 500 seats at shared tables divided into seven blocks with names of their own (among them お城下広場, 龍馬通り, いごっそう横丁): you buy from different shops and eat together, with the staff collecting and washing the dishes for everyone. The model inspired copies in Himeji (2003) and Takamatsu (2012), but Hirome remains the only one to have held up in the long term.
In the Obiyamachi district, a short walk from Kochi Castle.
