Opened on 7 November 1890 opposite Hibiya Park. The building that made it famous, Frank Lloyd Wright's, was completed in 1923 (it survived the Kantō earthquake of that same year with minor damage) and demolished in 1968: the entrance and the lobby were taken apart and reassembled at Meiji-mura, the open-air museum in Inuyama, in Aichi Prefecture. The current building dates from 1970 and was renovated in 2016.
ℹ️ The lobby and the ground floor are open to people who are not staying there, with shops and restaurants; the Old Imperial Bar, two floors below, is lined with original materials salvaged from Wright's building. The hotel is being rebuilt in phases, from 2024 to 2036, and stays open in the meantime: the tower already closed on 30 June 2024, while the main building (the one with the lobby and the bar) is announced as operating until 2030.
